35 years ago today, at 7:15 am EST on Wednesday, Nov. 13th, 1985, Richard Amsel died in New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital. He was 37 years old.
I was planning to give some updates on the progress of the film today, but I feel it’s better to mention them at a later time. For now, let’s just focus on remembering.
35 years is a lifetime ago, yet I wonder how different things would be for so many people’s lives had Richard Amsel not been taken so young. Certainly there would have been so much more beautiful art for the rest of us to enjoy. It’s our loss.
And here I realize I need to correct a longstanding inaccuracy. Amsel’s obituary in VARIETY, which was published on Jan. 1st, 1986, incorrectly listed Nov. 17th as the date of the artist’s death. However, it's actually Nov. 13th, as confirmed by Richard Amsel’s death certificate, his grave, and written notes on a eulogy provided to me by his family.
Here’s to you, Richard, wherever you may be.
Below: VARIETY obituary for Richard Amsel, listing the incorrect date of death as Nov. 17th, 1985. Amsel actually died on Nov. 13th.
